The Surrogate Hospital Bag | What to Pack for Your Hospital Stay

What should you pack in your surrogate hospital bag?

Delivery day is almost here! You have worked so hard to keep this baby healthy and happy, and it’s almost time to bring them into the world!

You’ve been through labor and delivery before, but may be wondering if you need to prepare anything differently for your surrogacy delivery. Just like with typical births, there are a number of items that everyone should pack. There are some that will depend on your situation. Having your hospital bag ready at least a few weeks before means you will have one less thing to think about at the last minute.

Important Documents for the Hospital Bag

It’s probably a given that you should have identification and insurance card with you when you go to the hospital. But we all know babies are on their own timeframe, and they don’t all give enough warning before they show up! Given the other details of your life, it is entirely possible to forget these details once it’s time to get to the hospital. To be on the safe side, have a copy each of your ID and your insurance card.

Depending on your hospital, your chart may already have information about your surrogacy journey. In some cases, hospitals like to have a copy of your contract with the IP(s) with their legal team and/or social workers. To be best prepared, you should pack a copy of your contract as well as the names and phone numbers of the intended parent(s), your agency, and your attorney. We also recommend a copy of parentage documentation and your birth plan, if applicable. Heartland Surrogacy connects with our clients’ hospitals in preparation for the delivery, so that everyone is aware of what arrangements need to be made, if any.

Toiletries

That first shower after delivery can be so comforting! To make it extra nice for yourself, pack your favorite shampoo, conditioner, and soap. You’ll enjoy the familiar smells and textures, which can get the shower feeling more like home than hospital. Also pack your other staples: deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, lotion (to combat dry hospital air), and hair brush. If you use them, include contact solution, contacts, and glasses. We also recommend lip balm and a hair tie.

If you prefer having a “fresh face” for photos, pack your makeup basics. Surrogacy births create many photo opportunities, so be prepared if makeup is important to you. Either way, your incredible accomplishment will. show through your radiant smile.

Creature Comforts

Even with a joyous event such as a birth, hospitals can feel cold and impersonal. To make your hospital stay more comfortable, consider bringing some items that bring you joy and ease. Some popular items for surrogacy hospital bags include warm socks or slippers, a robe, a favorite nightgown, and soothing essential oils. A fresh set of clothes will also come in handy for visits with the family you helped create, visitors, and your ride back home.

Postpartum Supplies

What items do you remember being helpful in your past postpartum recoveries? Some surrogates have appreciated having their preferred brand of maxi pads, for example. The hospital will provide you many supplies, but if there is something specific that you know will be helpful for you, be sure to pack it for your stay.

Snacks

Delivering a baby is hard work! Pack your favorite snacks to fuel yourself in the early labor stages, as well as for after delivery. You’ll be grateful to have something tasty to munch on. It may be a nice addition to what can be less-than-exciting hospital food.

Entertainment

Without a baby to care for, you will likely have some downtime while before being discharged. Include in your hospital bag some entertainment, such as a tablet, a portable craft, books, or magazines. And don’t forget charging cables for your electronics!
